About

The Saint Gaudens Double Eagle is often cited as the most beautiful coin in the history of American coinage. The design was created by the famous sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, who sought to bring a new standard of excellence to U.S. coinage which echoed back to classical models. The series was produced from 1907 until 1933 when all U.S. gold coinage was recalled.

This site provides some basic information on the series and details related to mintage, coin specifications, highlights, and rarities of the series.

Some of the images used for this site are from the Coin Page, while others are from the Smithsonian Institution’s National Numismatic Collection, particularly for the less available issues.
