Following two years of issue in 1920 and 1921 composed of significant rarities, the 1922 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle (Buy on eBay) represents the resumption of more widely available issues. This would remain the case until final years of the series when absolute rarities become of the norm.
The 1922 Double Eagles struck at the Philadelphia Mint have a mintage of 1,375,500, with a great number of surviving examples available for collectors in grades circulated through gem. This coin is one of the most heavily submitted issues to third party coin grading companies with more than 84,000 examples reported graded by PCGS and NGC.
This year, production also took place at the San Francisco Mint where 2,658,000 pieces were struck. While this issue is more or less available in grades through MS64, it becomes elusive in grades MS65 and higher. The major services have graded only 23 of the 1922-S Saint Gaudens Double Eagles in MS65, with five graded higher in MS66. One of the highest graded examples sold for $94,300 in 2005.
