With the highest reported mintage for the entire series, the 1928 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle (Buy on eBay) is one of the more available issues. However, it is interesting to note that other issues with lower mintages are actually more common due to the impacts of melting.
This year, double eagles were only struck at the Philadelphia Mint, but the quantity produced was more than twice the amount of the next highest mintage, which had occurred for the 1908 “no motto” issue. For 1928, the total mintage was 8,816,000 pieces.
Overall, the major grading services PCGS and NGC have certified around 90,000 examples of the 1928 Double Eagle. The majority occur in grades MS62-MS65. In higher grades, there have been about 4,000 pieces graded MS66 and around 150 graded MS67. At present, no pieces have been graded higher. The examples graded MS67 typically sell for around $9,000 to $12,000 at auction.
